Pol Espargaró showed his good form at the British Grand Prix, achieving his first pole position with Repsol Honda and a deserved fifth place in the race.
Both Pol Espargaró and Marc Márquez started the weekend of the British Grand Prix, held at the Silverstone circuit in England, with good pace on their Honda RC213Vs.
As the clouds hung over the asphalt, the riders began to run on the 5.8 kilometers long circuit, to which they have returned for the first time since 2019.
Pol took advantage of the day on Friday to continue to gain confidence in himself after the problems suffered during the last Grand Prix. He finished the first set of free practice in fourth place and, in the second, the # 44 improved his time to finish Friday as the fastest Honda rider overall, with a 2'00.035. Although seven tenths behind Quartararo, who was the first classified, Espargaró was only 0.2 seconds behind second, Jack Miller.
Marc, for his part, started the day demonstrating his good physical condition, managing to remain among the fastest riders in free practice 1. Unfortunately, when there were only a few minutes left until the first practice sessions finished, a fall to 270 km / h forced the eight times world champion to finish the session. However, # 93 got back on track for Free Practice 2, and improved his time to 2'00.051.
Saturday did not start badly either for the Repsol Honda team riders, as both achieved a direct pass to Q2, without giving more importance to a small fall of Pol at the end of free practice 3. After the incident, the little boy from the Espargaró family came out of the pit lane ready to fight to the fullest in Q2. With the second set of tires he selected, Pol unleashed himself and set his best lap time at Silverstone: 1'58.889. This time put him in second position, but once they were off the tracks, he was promoted to pole position, due to a violation of the track limits by Jorge Martín. This pole position becomes Pol's first with the Repsol Honda team and third in the premier class.
Marquez finished 10th in free practice 3 and fourth in free practice 4. Then, during Q2, Marc gifted the spectators with an incredible final lap, which earned him fifth place on the grid, 0.197 behind his teammate.
On Sunday he also woke up gray at Silverstone. Right away, the Repsol Honda team got to work, and Pol was again one of the fastest in the warm up, 0.135 seconds behind first place. A crash during the session upset Marc's plan, who still managed to set the tenth fastest time.
From pole, Pol shot out and, for the first four laps, managed to maintain the lead. Finally, Fabio Quartararo caught up with the Granollers rider on lap five. However, Pol did not give in when Alex Rins and his brother Aleix also approached to try to overcome him. When his tires started to wear out, Espargaró shifted his focus with the main goal of defending his position on the track. After crossing the finish line in fifth place, Pol achieved his best result to date as a Repsol Honda rider.
Marc also had a good start to the race. A slight contact with Jorge Martín caused Márquez to deviate a bit and, shortly after, they both fell to the ground unharmed. However, the incident was enough to force the drivers to finish the race. Now Marc, after apologizing to Martín, is already focused on the next race.
The 13th day will be run at the Aragón circuit, the track on which the RC213V works, having obtained seven victories out of the twelve Grand Prix held there since 2010.
